What is the differences between a Pulse and a Periodic wave ?
DISTINGUISH BETWEEN A PULSE AND A PERIODIC WAVE
PULSE
- The wave set up by a single disturbance in the medium is called a pulse.
- A pulse is a wave of short duration.
- A pulse is not repetitive.
- A pulse is formed in a small part of the medium. So, in the formation of a pulse, only a part of the medium is displaced from its original undisturbed position.
- When a pulse is formed, the medium oscillates or vibrates for a short while and then returns to its original undisturbed position.
PERIODIC WAVE
- The wave set up by continuous disturbance in the medium occurring due to regular vibration is called periodic wave.
- A periodic wave is a continuous wave of long duration.
- A periodic wave is repetitive. A periodic wave has a basic pattern which repeats itself after a fixed interval.
- A periodic wave stretches over the entire length of the medium. So, in the formation of a periodic wave, every point of the medium is displaced.
- When a periodic wave is formed, the medium oscillates or vibrates for a long time after it is disturbed.
