What is the difference between sound waves and light waves ?

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOUND WAVES AND LIGHT WAVES

SOUND WAVES ( MECHANICAL WAVES )

  1. Sound waves have low frequency and long wavelength.
  2. Sound waves cannot travel through vacuum.They required a material medium for their propagation. 
  3. Sound waves are longitudinal, in which the vibrations are parallel to the direction in which the waves travels.
  4. Sound waves have a speed of 331 m/s at zero degree celsius in air.
  5. Sound waves are due to the vibrations of the particles of the medium concerned.

LIGHT WAVES ( RADIO OR ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE )

  1. Light waves have very high frequencies and small wavelengths.
  2. Light waves can travel even through vacuum.
  3. Light waves are transverse in which the vibrations are perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels.
  4. The speed of light waves is 3x108 m/s in vacuum and approx. same in air. 
  5. Light waves are due to the varying electric and magnetic fields.
