It is a tropical to sub-tropical tree in the family Rutaceae ( the rue family, which includes rue, citrus and satinwood ). Its leaves are famous for their pleasant smell and taste. In Hindi, the name of this tree is written as '' करी पत्ता का पेड़ ''. This plant is full of medicinal quality as well. It is a commonly found tree in India. Its leaves are used in many dishes in the Indian subcontinent. Often used in curries, that's why the leaves are generally called by the name ''curry leaves'', although they are also actually ''sweet neem leaves'' in most Indian languages. Curry seasoning is a compilation of many herbs and spices, whose flavor can sometimes come from curry leave plants.
Curry leaf tree is also called noroxingho pat, karivepaku, kari bevu, curry vepillai, kadhi limbdo, kadi patta, sweet neem, karapincha or karuveppilai among numerous other names, depending on region.
It is a seed grown plant but stem cuttings can also be used for propagation. They are pretty easy to grow from seeds, treat them just like neem seeds. Curry leaf plant requires moderately moist soil. Growing this plant in the home garden is only advisable in areas without freezes. Sweet neem plant is frost tender but it can be grown indoors. Plant the tree in a well drained pot with good potting mix and place in a sunny area. Feed it weekly with a diluted solution of good fertilizer and trim the leaves as needed. You can use an insecticidal soap to combat the pests. Curry leaf care is quite straight forward and even suitable for a beginner.
