Note : Attempt questions from all Sections as directed.
Inst. : The candidates are required to answer only in serial order. If there are many parts of a question, answer them in continuation.

Section - A

(Short Answer Type Questions)

Note : All questions are compulsory. Each question carries 3 marks.
1. (A) Correct the following sentences :
           (i)   Did you ever go to Appu House in Delhi recently ?
           (ii)  We observed that the police-man chased a thief at that moment.
           (iii) After he murdered the child, his body was thrown into the river.
    (B) Change the Narration in the following sentences :
           (i)   She said, ''I am a doctor.''
           (ii)  The father said to me, ''Do you know the residence of the advocate.''
           (iii) She said to the stranger, ''You must leave my room at once.''
    (C) Correct the mistakes of the articles in the following sentences :
           (i)   Did you take a sugar and if so, how much ?
           (ii)  God made country and man made town.
           (iii) Kapil Deo brought glory to India by winning World Cup in 1983.
    (D) Fill in the blanks in the following sentences by using appropriate prepositions :
           (i)   Children are afraid ........ going to dark.
           (ii)  His dress is different ........ and cheaper than mine.
           (iii) The rich are always susceptible ........ flattery.
    (E) Use the verbs in brackets either in active or passive voice as the case may be in the blank spaces in the following sentences :
           (i)   My father ........ when he sees my brother's report card.  (Please)
           (ii)  Prohibition in many states ........ lately by the State Governments.  (Enforce)
           (iii) I ........ to see my aunt, when I reached home.  (Amaze)
    (F) Change the following into Interrogative sentence :
           (i)   I went to station by Auto.
           (ii)  He lives at Chandni Chowk in Delhi.
           (iii) His father is a doctor.

(Long Answer Type Questions)

Note : Attempt any two questions. Each question carries 8 marks.
2. Use the verbs in brackets in the correct form in the following conditional sentences :  1 each
    (i)     If you (like) a job in the company, I (get) you one.
    (ii)    If a driver (brake) suddenly on a wet road he (skid).
    (iii)   If you (like) I, (get) a job in this company.
    (iv)   If he (be) only fifteen still (be) at school.
    (v)    If I (have) heaps of monkey I (drink) champagne with every meal.
    (vi)   If you (Keep) a cat, the mice (not run) about everywhere.
    (vii)  If you (hear) the phone ringing why you (not answer) it.
    (viii) If Ram (request) Mohan for help the latter's response certainly (be) positive.
3. Complete the following sentences by using suitable tags :  1 each
    (i)     There isn't an answer ........ ?
    (ii)    He's really good-looking ........ ?
    (iii)   They weren't enjoying ........ ?
    (iv)   She isn't here, yet  ........ ?
    (v)    It's the last one ........ ?

4. Expanded the following :  4 each
    (i) They also serve who only stand and wait.
    (ii) Honesty is the best policy.
5. Translate the following into English :
    प्रकाश वह वस्तु है जो यात्रा करती है। जब एक टार्च जलाई जाती है तब उन बादलों तक जिनकी ओर प्रकाश फेंका जाता है उनकी किरण को पहुँचाने में कुछ समय लगता है। पर प्रकाश की रफ़्तार इतनी तेज होती है और पार की जाने वाली दूरी इतनी कम होती है कि किरण पृथ्वी से बादलों तक जाने में लिया गया समय मालूम नहीं होता है। वास्तव में प्रकाश 194000 मील प्रति सेकण्ड की अति तीव्र गति से चलता है अर्थात् प्रकाश की किरण यदि टॉर्च का प्रकाश इतनी दूर पहुँचने के लिए काफी तेज है तो वह 194000 मील दूर देखने वाले तक पहुँचने में ठीक एक सेकण्ड लेगी।

(Long Answer Type Questions)

Note : Attempt any two questions. Each question carries 8 marks.
6. Make a precis of the following passage :
    What is called 'Modern Civilization' is not the result of a balanced development of all man's nature but of accumulated knowledge applied to practical life. The problem now facing humanity is : 'What is going to be done with all this knowledge' ? As is often pointed out, knowledge is a two edged weapon which can be used equally for good or evil. It is now being used indifferently for both. Could any spectacle, for instance, be more grimly whimsical than of gunners used to restore them ? We have to think ourselves very seriously what will happen to this twofold use of knowledge.
7. Complete the following sentences by inserting the most  appropriate form of the verb given in each sentence :
    (i)     I ........ (wait) for him since morning.
    (ii)    He ........ (go) to Mysore yesterday.
    (iii)   She smiled as if she ........ (see) me before.
    (iv)   If he ........ (disturb) me now, he will repent.
    (v)    The town was in uproar; men shouted women ........ (weep).
    (vi)   The train ........ (leave) half an hour before I ........ (reach) the station.
    (vii)  If he ........ (catch) the train he would have been here by now.
    (viii) You will get a prize if you ........ (stand) first in this class.
8. Correct the mistakes of infinitive, participle and gerund in the following sentences :
    (i)     Nitin went to London for learning English.
    (ii)    A chair is a furniture to sit on.
    (iii)   He hasn't a chair for sitting on.
    (iv)   He excels to speak English.
    (v)    It is easy distinguishing this pen from that.
    (vi)   Please tell him how doing the exercise.
    (vii)  Being very busy the application was forgotten.
    (viii) I heard him to lecture.
9. (A) Combine the following sentences as directed :  1 each
          (a) The sun rose. Frog disappeared.  (Into simple sentence)
          (b) There is not dobt in it. He will do it.  (Into simple sentence)
          (c) He is a fool. He is dishonest also.  (Into compound sentence)
          (d) He is going somewhere. I cannot say.  (Into complex  sentence)
    (B) Transform the following sentences as directed :  1 each
          (a) The news is too good to believe.  (Remove too)
          (b) Rustum was as powerful as his brother.  (Into comparative sentence)
          (c) Only he is responsible for any failure in life.  (Change Into negative sentence)
          (d) No one can be expected to do wrong to his parents.  (Into interrogative sentence)
