Asia's first Nobel Laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore's theory of education is marked by naturalistic and aesthetic values. He had a belief that " The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence".  Based on this he founded "SHANTINIKETAN",  an educational institution with a difference. It was later expanded and renamed as "VISHWA-BHARATI UNIVERSITY in 1921. By 1951 it had become one of India's central universities. Many world famous teachers came to be associated with it including C.F Andrews and Alex Aronson. Some of its illustrious students are INDIRA GANDHI, GAYATRI DEVI, ABDUL GANI KHAN and Nobel Laureate AMARTYASEN. Shantiniketan" was built up on the following pillars of thought.

2. INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT : This means the development of imagination, creative free thinking, constant curiosity and alertness of mind.

3. PHYSICAL  DEVELOPMENT : He believed that  a sound body can have a sound mind. So he introduce yoga and different sports in Shantiniketan.

4. LOVE AND HUMANITY : Education can teach people to realize oneness of the globe.

5. ESTABLISHMENT OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOD AND MAN : Man bears the diverse qualities and personalities  offered by God.

6. FREEDOM : Education is a liberal process which provides utmost freedom to the individual for his all round development.

7. CORRELATION OF OBJECTS : A peaceful world is only possible when correlation between man and nature will be established.
