KALPANA CHAWLA : A BRAVE DAUGHTER OF MOTHER INDIA
One of seven astronauts killed in the Columbia space shuttle explosion, on February 02, 2003 was Indian born Kalpana Chawla. She was born on 1 July, 1961. Kalpana’s death has ended prematurely a career of great promise showing sharp intellectual powers great academic distinction and supreme courage. She was only 41. A loving mother of two children, with her steadily rising achievements in the elite profession of space which came to an abrupt and grievous halt. Born in karnal in Punjab, Kalpana had her schooling in her native town and her fist degree in aeronautical engineering from the Punjab University. After obtaining masters from the University of Texas, the USA, she took her doctorate from Colorado University. After university, she started her space research career at NASA in 1988 and specialized in simulation of various body functions in future space missions. In 1995 she joined 15t group of astronauts and was sent in to outer space. Her sudden death in a mission that was about to end in great success is indeed a matter of great sorrow and a grievous loss to scientific research in space. But she has also made India proud by her courage and by showing how a daughter of this ancient land can match any man from and modern country in learning, technical know how and limitless courage. All young Indians should be proud to emulate her.
