EMMA
Emma
Emma was published in 1815 it was dedicated to the Prince Regent and it was reviewed in the 'Quarterly Review' by Scott, the literary soverign of the age.
The heroine : Emma is, I think clearly, Jane Austen's masterpiece,'' says R.W.Chapman, though no less a person than Somerset Maugham remarks, ''Emma is the only of Miss Austen's novels that I find long-winded''. Emma is not a great favourite among Jane Austen's heroines and the novelist herself anticipated public opinion when she wrote, ''I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like.'' But no one will deny that Emma is one of the best conceived and worked cut of all Jane Austen's characters.
