CORRUPTION
The term corruption has very wide meaning. In brief corruption may be called malpractices in any way. It may be kind or cash. In our society corruption is seen everywhere even from the highest level to lowest level. It is spreading like cancer in society.
In the offices we cannot get any work done without greasing the palms of clerk and peons. Not only the clerks and peons but the high officials and engineers also are involved in the corrupt practices. They give out contracts for government work through tenders. But they make the payments only after receiving their facility fee. So the contractors are bound to use the material of inferior quality.
In the police department many innocent people are prosecuted and criminals are set free only on the basis of bribe. In Income Tax, Sales Tax & Excise departments also the taxes are imposed upon the businessman but afterwards they are reduced or totally exempted on payment of some cash. Such is the case in many of the government offices. Even the ministers are not untouched by this. They have the power to issue license and quota of different commodities and earn money from back doors. The news paper have been daily producing the news of corruption in the government machinery. There is corruption not in lakhs but in crores and millions. Beside this corruption in cash, there is a corruption also e.g. flattery, physical service, inviting the officers to dinners, offering presents and gifts on various occasions.
The root cause of corruption is either poverty or any historical background e.g. British rule in India. Government has established many departments to check corruption, e.g. Anti Corruption Dept., Vigilance Dept. etc. but it can be uprooted only when the mentality of the people is changed.
