1. Write a precis of the following passage giving a suitable title :

Ashoka was at first disposed to follow the example of his father and grandfather and complete the conquest of the Indian Peninsula. He invaded Kalinga (335 B.C.), a country on the east coast of Madras. He was successful in his military operations. He was so disgusted by the cruelty and horror of war that he renounced it. He would have no more of it. He adopted the peaceful doctrine of Buddhism and declared that henceforth the conquest should be the conquest of religion. His reign for eight and twenty years was one of the brightest interludes in the troubled history of mankind. He organized a great digging of wells in India and the planting of trees for shade. He founded hospitals and public gardens for the growing of medical herbs. He created a ministry for the care of the aborigins and subject races of India. He made the provision for education of women. He made vast benefactions to the Buddhist teaching orders and tried to stimulate them own a own accumulated literature.

2. Translate the following passage into English :

गाड़ी आने से पहले ही हम स्टेशन गये थे। कुछ लोग पहले से ही स्टेशन पर पहुँच चुके थे। हम टिकट खरीदकर प्लेटफार्म पर पहुँचे ही थे कि गाड़ी आ गईं। हमारे डिब्बे में घुसने से पहले ही हमारे कुली ने हमारा सामान अन्दर पहुँचा दिया था। एक यात्री के गाड़ी में बैठने से पहले ही किसी ने उसकी जेब काट ली। इससे पहले कि पुलिस जेबकतरे को पकड़ पाती, वह भाग गया। सबेरा होने से पहले है गाड़ी कानपुर पहुँच चुकी थी। हमारे पहुँचने से पहले ही हमारे मित्र लोग हमारे स्वागत के लिए स्टेशन पर पहुँच चुके थे।

4. (a) Change the following passage into indirect narration :

The teacher became angry with the student and said, “Why have you again disturbed the class in this way ? I have told you before, that when I am speaking, you should be silent, Leave the room and do not return today."

(b) Correct the errors in the use of infinitives, gerunds and participles in any five of the following sentences :
